Hilary McKay was born in Boston, Lincolnshire. She studied Botany and Zoology at St. Andrew's University and worked as a biochemist. After becoming a mother of two children however she gave up her job to focus on writing full-time. Hilary is the winner of numerous prestigious awards including the Smarties Prize, the Guardian Children's Fiction Award and the Whitbread. She now lives in Derbyshire with her family. She is the author of several Barrington Stoke titles, Amazing! Dragon! and Swop!
