Using Our Books in Schools: A Quick Recap

Barrington Stoke books are popular in schools as accessible, inspiring reads suitable for mixed-ability groups. As well as selling the books singly for reading for pleasure, we also supply a wide range of packs to schools. Here’s some inspiration on how to use the books to bring literacy to life in your school, plus a recap of some of the packs available.

Paired reading

When an older child helps a younger child with their reading, research shows that both benefit. Our lower reading-age fiction offer ideal reads for this purpose – big-name authors, great stories and a low word-count so everyone can feel they are making good progress. We use plenty of chapter breaks too so there are natural places to stop – and cliffhangers so everyone wants to come back for more! Find our Primary 4u2read Reading Age 7 fiction pack here and our Secondary RA 7 Pack here.

Classroom reads

You Killed Me! by Keith GrayFree your literacy sessions from the tyranny of the ‘excerpt’ and make reading meaningful by exploring whole books with your group or class. Our books are pared back enough to make it possible for everyone to read the book and see the ‘story mountain’, and we have lots and lots of classroom discussion guides to give you pointers on how to explore individual titles with students. Primaries might like to start with our Michael Morpurgo Bargain Group Reading Pack, with free resources here, here and here. If you’re in secondary, how about Keith Gray’s brilliant You Killed Me! or Anthony McGowan’s stunner The Fall?

Topic work

We have a range of narrative non-fiction, biography and fiction-with-facts ideal for tempting in reluctant readers who prefer their reading ‘real’. Find the Stacks of Facts pack here – it’s suitable for primary and secondary. Head on over to our Reading War microsite too – it’s packed with supportive material to explore WWI through our brilliant fiction titles Over the Line and Tilly’s Promise.

Make your collections more diverse

Many schools’ book collections do not reflect the reality of the modern UK or children in our classrooms. Boost the diversity of your book collection with our Diversity Packs for Primary and Secondary.

Support SEN readers

Our Acorn readers and Secondary RA6 Pack offer very low reading-age materials for primary and secondary – stories of around 250 words per book with free downloadable teaching materials here and here.

Third Party Schemes

We also supply packs levelled for Accelerated Reader and our books can be especially helpful in letting you top up your AR collections at lower levels. Find our AR book packs here.

We love hearing from schools, so please do get in touch to tell us how you use our books to grow a love of reading in your students. We also have classroom catalogues available and run regular competitions over on Twitter – do keep in touch!
