Lark Shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal 2020

These are strange and extraordinary times we find ourselves in, but even in such trying situations we believe that great stories have an important part to play. Now more than ever, it feels vital to celebrate books and reading. So we hope that we can brighten your day a little and help you escape from the news cycle with a spot of fantastic book news – we are delighted to share that Anthony McGowan’s Lark has been shortlisted for the 2020 Carnegie Medal!

When Rook was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal in 2018, it marked a big moment in our company’s history. We saw it as groundbreaking for a specialist publisher like us, and one that put us on the literary map. To receive such recognition once again with Lark, another of Tony’s beautifully thoughtful and poignant novellas about brothers Nicky and Kenny, is nothing short of humbling – and worthy of huge celebration! Congratulations Tony, and thank you for trusting us with these boys and their story.

Our mission to make great stories by great authors accessible to more readers makes us a little different from other publishers. We’re firm believers that the length of a book is by no means indicative of the value of the story within, and we’re delighted that the Carnegie judges agree and recognise that a short novel can have just as much power. Quality writing that everyone can read and enjoy is central to our mission at Barrington Stoke. Opening up books and reading to everyone is something we champion at every turn, so to have a book on the shortlist of one of the most prestigious children’s book awards in the world is a real honour.

We work with so many wonderful librarians who have supported us and these books for every one of our 20+ years, and we can’t thank them enough for their continual championing and advocacy for our mission – thank you! It’s an incredible shortlist and we’re so proud to have a place on it.

Congratulations to all the authors and illustrators, and especially to our own Tony McGowan – three cheers for Lark, and here’s to short novels for all readers to enjoy!
